Three Things (for Aug 12, 2015)

I still don’t do these as often as I intended but that shouldn’t stop me from still doing ’em now and then … right?   So here’s three things in my stream of consciousness at the moment

1) You know that phrase “life’s too short”, the one people use generally talking about how you should do stuff you enjoy or whatever?  I always think of it the other way around, life is too LONG to do stuff that makes you miserable.   Among the many things life is too long to be doing is trying to be somebody you’re not.   It’s tedious, it’s tiresome, virtually everyone sucks at it anyway.  Don’t be doing that, m’kay?

2) 34 songs.  That’s how many new rock songs I’ve at least sampled in the past 48 hours to draw some conclusion about with an eye toward whether they might eventually land in one of my weekly playlists.   I joke occasionally about being like those Dow Scrubbin’ Bubbles, I work hard so you don’t have toooooo … but maybe it isn’t entirely a joke either.  The work part I mean.  Every one of those songs is a legit attempt by a band for some sort of airplay/attention.  Those were singles (mostly clearly defined as such, a few that were effectively singled, only one would strictly be labeled an album cut).  Some of them sucked, some really really sucked hard but quite a few didn’t.  And yet radio — both traditional & satellite at this point — hammers home the same crap so often.  If I feel like I simply put more effort into seeking what’s out there in my favored format, listening to it and then having an actual honest-to-God opinion about it than a whole lot of people getting PAID to do so … well, I dare them — double-dog dare them even — to prove me wrong.  When a big name puts out something mediocre, let it sit.  When a nobody puts out something damned good, play it.

3) You know why I don’t do more of these little entries?  A big part of it is that I’m often stuck with two things I want to cover but end up scuffling to find the third.  Still, working in sets of three fits the blog title so well it’s hard to let go of the format.   Who knows, maybe when I only have two it’s actually better than I just keep my mouth shut, who knows how much randomness you’ve been spared because I don’t have a third.
