J3C College Football Poll (2019 pre-season)

Are you ready for some football?

My weekly College Football Top 25 returns for a tenth year, and just like the years past, it’s “part art, part science, part instinct …  my eyeball of the overall.”  It’s a combination of how I perceive teams’ ability, their performance, and their relative positioning in light of both.

Last year was the year of the transfer QB, something that may be so common that it already become the norm rather than the exception.  And while that’s certainly become significant, there’s still something awfully familiar about the college football landscape.

— Five of my top six teams today have been ranked in each and every poll I’ve published
— Five of my top six teams today finished in the top six at the end of last season

There’s also a greater sense of predictability being perceived this year it seems.  Or if not predictability, at least in expectations.

— Nationally, the AP poll and the Coaches’ preseason polls had the same top nine teams, in the exact same order
— Between the two major polls there were just 26 teams needed to fill out the Top 25.  They differed in composition by exactly one team.

We may not be right but we mostly seem pretty convinced.

Along the way to discovering how wrong we can all be, it appears to be another long season ahead for my personal rooting interests.  Georgia Tech has begun a sorely overdue but almost certainly excruciating rebuild.   I suspect Tennessee may have sabotaged their own rebuild with an inexplicable OC hiring. And Ole Miss?  Well,  let’s just say I still haven’t seen any reason to believe they have adult leadership.   My best hope for success I have emotional investment in once again lies in D-III again this year, as some of my favorite young men wind up their careers at Washington & Lee.

It’s almost time for toe to meet leather, so all that’s left for me is unveiling the 2019 Preseason edition of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.     (final 2018 J3C ranking follows their name)
