J3C College Football Top 25 (after week eight)

It was either a very big weekend for college football hopefuls … or it was just business as usual.
I’m not entirely sure which.

The four teams in the top seven that were active had little more trouble with their respective opponents than the three other teams had with Bye … Oklahoma State was lucky to survive … Oklahoma had more trouble than maybe expected too … USC and Michigan were just flat out exposed … Georgia Tech didn’t make it pretty for a lot of the night but eventually avoided losing on Homecoming … And once again I’m grateful that the schedule doesn’t include a matchup of the Tennessee “offense” and the Ole Miss “defense”.   I’d be afraid that two entities that don’t exist in any meaningful form could collide and create some sort of space-time anomaly with disastrous results.

So that’s that … and here’s the latest JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.     (last week’s J3C ranking follows their name)

  1. Alabama (1)
  2. Penn State (2)
  3. Georgia (3)

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week seven)

Cover your eyes if you’re squeamish.

Friday the 13th apparently wanted to be Groundhog Day this year, with team after team finding themselves trapped in a horror movie with no escape.

It began innocently enough, unless you’re Clemson.  This wasn’t classic Clemson’ing though, this was more like playing with fire again but finally getting burned … Washington State made Friday a late night horror double feature … Then Auburn managed to inexplicably find a way to lay an egg of epic proportions, with a second half that has many wondering if the biggest problem on The Plains might really truly be the head coach … San Diego State, Texas Tech, and Navy turned in their own straight-to-video slasher flicks … By Saturday night, it really wasn’t a shock to see Washington turn invisible for most of their game, viewers had seen so much carnage already that most were probably getting a little numb … Michigan and USC and Miami and Oklahoma all took different routes through the genre before opting for happier endings … Alabama, on the other hand, chose to release another sequel, though in Arkansas some lobbied for the film to be rated NC-17, unfit for younger viewers … Earlier in the day in Knoxville, ticket buyers just wished they’d stop showing the same movie over and over, nobody is expecting any different endings any more … At least the Ole Miss faithful got a feelgood moment in a otherwise lackluster slate they’ve endured …

All in all, a rather dreary season for me continues unabated, so here’s the latest JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.     (last week’s J3C ranking follows their name)

  1. Alabama (1)
  2. Penn State (4)

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week six)

Pop. Pop. Pop.

That’s the sound of bubbles bursting around college football yesterday, the sort of day when I once again question why anyone thought there was a need to expand from two teams to four for any sort of playoff, much less why anyone would want to expand beyond that.

Oklahoma lays an enormous egg, which gets scrambled, fried, and poached by a walk-on QB … Michigan wishes they HAD a walk-on QB …. I’d hate to be Bama’s players in practice this week after they decided to sleepwalk for a fair chunk of a game … Is it really only a month since Auburn scuffled hard to beat Mercer at home?  I can’t recall a team getting such a turnaround by simply cutting a backup QB off their roster, but it’s hard to not notice the difference … Miami beats FSU in a painful fashion, hard to watch for both ‘Noles fans and for fans of decent QB play … I honestly don’t know how it’s even possible to be as tragic offensively as the other Florida team in the P5 though, losing to LSU right now has to officially put at least a small warming tray under the seat of any head coach … After seeing what happens with backup QBs, I have to figure Clemson is breathing a sigh of relief, pending the recovery of their starter …  Ole Miss is now officially a dumpster fire, Knoxville remains fully engulfed as well despite an off week.

All in all, a rather dreary season for me continues unabated, so here’s the latest JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.     (last week’s J3C ranking follows their name)
