2014 Albums of the Year

If “rock is dead” as some would suggest, someone forgot to tell a wide array of artists in 2014 because the depth and breadth of albums released during the year was almost staggering.  And the word “almost” might be unnecessary if I’m entirely honest about it.

This is the fourth time I’ve compiled a year-end album list and the process was noticeably tougher than ever before.  The sheer volume of material worth consideration from the past twelve months was astonishing, approximately 200 albums were examined track by track, assessed, sorted, ranked, and in some cases reconsidered a second or third time.

The “rules”, such as they are, remain similar to how I originally described them back in 2011.

“It’s a lot like my college football Top 25, there’s no one absolute factor that puts one entry ahead of another.  I’m not putting artistic merit ahead of fun or chart/sales success in front of my own enjoyment.  And, as always, I apologize in advance for any errors of omission.”

One thing that has changed from previous years is that EPs are listed separately from full-length albums this time around.  The increased number of EPs and the continuing issue of how to compare projects that can vary from as few as 3 tracks to as many as 17 tracks seemed to make this the time to make that adjustment, with list of noteworthy EPs at the end of this entry.

Similar to last year, the top two albums of 2014 were fairly obvious to me before officially starting the year-end process.  The rest of the list, well, I found more surprises than disappointments and that made the challenge of ranking them even tougher.  If previous years lists could have easily been 50 instead of 25, this year could have easily grown to 100 without a struggle.  Please be sure to check my comments that follow the official posting of the Top 25, there are some additional albums worthy of recognition that are included in various sub-categories/genres.

“Dead”?   I’d say 2014 proved that there’s still more than enough life left to kick ass in abundance.
And now, without further ado, I proudly present Jon’s Three Cents Top 25 Albums of 2014

Ready To Rock (weekly playlists)

Given that it was a fairly stable week with little movement nationally, I was more than a little surprised to find myself with five songs turning over in my own Spotify Top 40.  Still one song missing that should be there but that’s not a killer by any means.  And way earlier in the week than I’ve been able to get it ready to roll lately.

Missing songs this week:
Play Ball – AC/DC

New to the Spotify list this week:
Desire – Megan Myers, Dirty White Boots – Lenny Kravitz, Disaster – In The Verse (re-entry),
An Island – Chevelle, Carnivore – Starset

Dropping off the Spotify list this week
Shots – Charm City Devils, Cold Summer – Fuel, Villainy Thrives – Trivium, Remember Me – Black Stone Cherry, Rise – Fight The Fade

For the larger (nearly 200 songs) YouTube version there’s nearly a dozen new songs added  this week including an amazing track from Jeff Scott Soto’s new eponymous band, featuring Gus G to make it even better.  There’s also a very solid cut from Eden’s Curse, the new single from Of Mice & Men, a hot off the press video from Santa Cruz, several “album cuts” and more. You can find it at this link

Four in, four out, a pretty solid (if not quite spectacular) Spotify Top 40.  Still one song missing that should be there but, all in all, not bad.  And way earlier in the week than I’ve been able to get it ready to roll lately.

Missing songs this week:
Play Ball – AC/DC

New to the Spotify list this week:
Something From Nothing – Foo Fighters, Shots – Charm City Devils,  Stars – Sixx A.M.,
Born 2 Destroy – Rev Theory

Dropping off the Spotify list this week
Disaster – In The Verse, Through The Looking Glass – Sleepwave, Zombies In The Sun – Letters From The Fire, Dragonaut – Judas Priest

For the larger (nearly 200 songs) YouTube version there’s more than a half dozen new songs added  this week including the aforementioned Foo Fighters single,  brand new music in time for Halloween from Hollywood Undead, a surprisingly good track from Lenny Kravitz, some quality straight up rock from Temperance Movement, and more. You can find it at this link

Also, if you’re wondering exactly how all of this gets put together – the hows & whys of it – this recent blog entry probably explains more than you ever wanted to know.
