J3C College Football Top 25 (after week nine)

Who’s on first, what’s on second, I Don’t Know is fifteenth.

While the top of the poll remains stable, the remainder is simply a mess.

I’m sure Bama & Michigan enjoyed their weekend off but I suspect Clemson may have enjoyed their Saturday on even more … Tough week to be a major college football fan in the state of Florida … Oops of the week likely belongs to Texas, though Oregon and Wisconsin deserve (dis)honorable mention … Not to be outdone, hard fail by Washington … Tennessee has returned to the lofty tier of “can’t finish” while Georgia Tech discovered that just letting the quarterback keep the ball might cut down on some of those pesky turnovers …

Though it feels increasingly futile, I’ll once again include 25 teams in the latest update of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.  (otherwise I’d probably need to change the name or something)

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week eight)

After a week filled with surprises, this weekend produced only one major shock … but it certainly was a big one.

It might be fairly argued that the shocking loss by Ohio State will have more impact on the eventual final four than all the other upsets that occurred the previous week.  While the Buckeyes still have a path back into contention for a playoff berth, they will require a considerable amount of help after such a thorough flameout … Otherwise, a relative quiet week at the top as both Alabama and Clemson dispatched opponents with ease … LSU and Michigan did what they had to, though neither was particularly impressive in the process … Below that, honestly, teams mostly rearranged themselves though I’m not sure the rearrangement matters in the big picture.

Personally, it was a relief to have Georgia Tech enjoy a bye week, Ole Miss showed their reality again, Washington & Lee escaped with a narrow win.  Most notably for me in terms of the gridiron however was my high school alma mater claiming their first ever region title more than six decades after they began playing football.  It was a privilege to see that in person, so #GoDragons.

Still, the reason I’m here and you’re here concerns football played (mostly) on Saturday’s so let’s move them around a bit with another update of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week seven)

If you saw all that happened in week seven coming then you’re probably not even here.

Because if you anticipated all the havoc created by the upsets and near-upsets then you probably went to Vegas (or some other legalized locale) and you’re now too rich to bother with reading blogs on the internet.  If you’re here, however, then at some point on Saturday you were probably as bewildered as I was.

Some of the upsets weren’t entirely unbelievable.  There was always a chance that Georgia would face a sterner test than a (not so) stiff breeze and wilt.  Aaaaaand they did …. Ohio State scuffling with Minnesota for a half and Notre Dame getting late in the day before finally vanquishing Pitt were probably equally or more surprising games than the biggest upset on the board … Less surprising was the best (now back to) .500 team in the country beating West Virginia … Washington & Oregon was always probably a coin flip but Michigan State looked dead in the water until taking down Penn State … Texas gets by Baylor though losing your starting QB tends to make things more interesting than they might have been otherwise … Memphis had UCF on the ropes, then proved that Bubba Sparxx was indeed correct (“I had it and I got it are like two distant cousins”) … On & on the day went, Florida struggles with Vandy, Miami pulls a Richt, Colorado flames out, the Gus Bus can’t climb Rocky Top … what a day

Things were so bizarro universe that Ole Miss even won an SEC game.   Georgia Tech, meanwhile, has a third quarter that epitomized the state of the program & maintained at least some sense of order in the universe.

It’s made a mess of things outside the top three, and I figure we’re only getting started with the scrambling so I’m not getting too attached to the order of teams in the latest update of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week six)

Chaos comes early this year.

Usually, somewhere down the stretch during the college football season, a few unexpected results lead to turmoil & chaos in the rankings.   I guess 2018 wanted to get to it early.

Oh the top is still stable enough alright.  Bama, Georgia, Ohio State, and Clemson had all done their thing by the time Saturday was through.  Below them however …

Florida dispatched LSU and suddenly becomes relevant in the SEC East again … Texas gets a huge rivalry win over Oklahoma but decreases the Big 12’s chance of being part of the playoff in the process … Auburn is reduced to playing spoiler for the rest of the year after a flop against Mississippi State … Kentucky’s dreams were dashed by A&M … Stanford’s season seems to have imploded … Miami nearly flopped in a rivalry game for worse than Oklahoma did (and that was bad enough that it got Mike Stoops fired, so the bar was pretty high) … Michigan State got exposed, Oklahoma State lost too though maybe to the best 2-3 team in the country … and my most recent Top 25 is reduced to rubble.

Georgia Tech embarrassed Louisville (speaking of DC’s that coulda gotten fired), to the delight of CPJ no doubt … Ole Miss made the most of a homecoming victim that played their part perfectly … and Tennessee couldn’t even score against Open Date

Chaos.   Or maybe I should say “Mayhem”? (shout out to Allstate). I’d be lying if I said I was completely certain about the latest update of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week five)

This whole blogging thing works better if you actually remember to, you know, publish stuff.

Yes, it was overnight Monday before I realized that I put together the weekly update but never pushed the little blue button so that anyone could see it.   My bad.  Sorry.  So let’s see what the weekend had for us, hmm?

Bama is Bama … Ohio State got a little help from Penn State’s inexplicable playcalling and came away with a win … Clemson got introduced to the dangers of the reality of the QB landscape in 2018 but lived to tell the tale … Georgia keeps winning but still hasn’t played a team with much of a pulse so there’s still more to learn about them, one way or the other … Speaking of playing a team with no pulse, LSU wins … Notre Dame gets one of the potentially most important wins of the season so far, one that might not only determine their fate but possibly the playoff hopes of the PAC as well … BYU and Cal were this week’s examples of why it’s increasingly pointless in extending the rankings down to 25, anything past single digits might very well be simply “Field”

We’ve already covered the dismal weekend for the Vols and the Rebels, leaving Georgia Tech to provide the lone bright spot for my rooting interests for the weekend, as they proved that they (probably) wouldn’t be the worst team in the MAC.  Woo hoo.

After all of that, you may not be able to tell the ranked teams without a scorecard.  Or at least, not without the latest edition of JonsThreeCents College Football Top 25.
