Ready To Rock (weekly playlists)

Given that it was a fairly stable week with little movement nationally, I was more than a little surprised to find myself with five songs turning over in my own Spotify Top 40.  Still one song missing that should be there but that’s not a killer by any means.  And way earlier in the week than I’ve been able to get it ready to roll lately.

Missing songs this week:
Play Ball – AC/DC

New to the Spotify list this week:
Desire – Megan Myers, Dirty White Boots – Lenny Kravitz, Disaster – In The Verse (re-entry),
An Island – Chevelle, Carnivore – Starset

Dropping off the Spotify list this week
Shots – Charm City Devils, Cold Summer – Fuel, Villainy Thrives – Trivium, Remember Me – Black Stone Cherry, Rise – Fight The Fade

For the larger (nearly 200 songs) YouTube version there’s nearly a dozen new songs added  this week including an amazing track from Jeff Scott Soto’s new eponymous band, featuring Gus G to make it even better.  There’s also a very solid cut from Eden’s Curse, the new single from Of Mice & Men, a hot off the press video from Santa Cruz, several “album cuts” and more. You can find it at this link

Also, if you’re wondering exactly how all of this gets put together – the hows & whys of it – this recent blog entry probably explains more than you ever wanted to know.

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week nine)

No matter how much nor how little I get to watch, college football steadily marches on toward the showdown of the final four.   Or the Quality Quartet.  Or whatever they’re calling the teams for the championship playoff this year.

Real-life intruded on my usual Saturday routine this week, wiping out all but cursory viewing of the day games.  As it turned out, the best shows were at night anyway.

LSU knocking Ole Miss from the ranks of the unbeaten, with a brain “Freeze” by the coach and an even bigger brain cramp by his QB, that’s college football for you … Alabama’s first quarter demolition of Tennessee was sort of impressive, but their slipping into neutral for such a long stretch showed why many still have some doubts … Was Ohio State escaping Penn State impressive because they managed it, or unimpressive because they had to? … Clemson spent a good part of their game showing why the young QB Watson is their real hope right now … Earlier in the day, Georgia Tech proved that enough turnovers can be enough for nearly anybody to get rolling.

Later than usual, with less conversation than usual, it’s still time for a new J3C Top 25 for the week as we start to peek ahead toward the big show at the end of the year.

1. Mississippi State (1)
2. Florida State (2)
3. Michigan State (4)
4. Auburn (5)

10 Songs I’m Cranking Up (10/23/14)

Busier than a one-armed paperhanger lately, so sometimes just cranking it up loud is about the only relief I get from the stress.

Every week I share several playlists of hard rock here on the blog … my Spotify Top 40, my current YouTube playlist, even a Spotify “Back Forty” for those who are really in the know.   Those are determined in various ways which I’ve explained elsewhere here on the blog.

Despite all that, I don’t say much about what I’m actually listening to and enjoying the most. You know, the songs that I immediately crank up whenever they come on Sirius Octane or that I make sure to play when I start building a queue in Spotify or that I sing (badly) randomly as I go about my day.

Whatever the case, I just thought it would be fun to occasionally forget about charts and singles vs album cuts and anything other than just plain ol’ “what I’m loving right now”.  Of course there’s more songs than just these that I’ll turn up if you try to talk while they’re on but I figure I have to have some sort of limit to how long this post gets.

In no specific order, here are 10 songs that I’m definitely cranking up a lot right now

Dangerous – Shaman’s Harvest
Breaking Skin
– Nonpoint
Born This Way – Thousand Foot Krutch
The Devil In I – Slipknot
Heart Of Fire  – Black Veil Brides
Something Different – Godsmack
Villainy Thrives – Trivium
Heavy – Glorious Sons
Wrath – Soto (f. Gus G)
Dead Man – We As Human

Ready To Rock (weekly playlists)

Four in, four out, a pretty solid (if not quite spectacular) Spotify Top 40.  Still one song missing that should be there but, all in all, not bad.  And way earlier in the week than I’ve been able to get it ready to roll lately.

Missing songs this week:
Play Ball – AC/DC

New to the Spotify list this week:
Something From Nothing – Foo Fighters, Shots – Charm City Devils,  Stars – Sixx A.M.,
Born 2 Destroy – Rev Theory

Dropping off the Spotify list this week
Disaster – In The Verse, Through The Looking Glass – Sleepwave, Zombies In The Sun – Letters From The Fire, Dragonaut – Judas Priest

For the larger (nearly 200 songs) YouTube version there’s more than a half dozen new songs added  this week including the aforementioned Foo Fighters single,  brand new music in time for Halloween from Hollywood Undead, a surprisingly good track from Lenny Kravitz, some quality straight up rock from Temperance Movement, and more. You can find it at this link

Also, if you’re wondering exactly how all of this gets put together – the hows & whys of it – this recent blog entry probably explains more than you ever wanted to know.

J3C College Football Top 25 (after week eight)

After a day of remarkably bad games at least we saw a good one to close out the weekend.

Do I think FSU and Notre Dame are the two best teams in the country?  Probably not.  But they put on an entertaining show despite their respective flaws and after some of the curb stomps that took place earlier in the day that has value.  How bad was football watching for much of Saturday?  Consider this:  Georgia-Arkansas ended up being closest game involving an SEC team and that was 38-6 at halftime.

K-State vs Oklahoma deserves mention for at least being interesting … TCU’s rout of Oklahoma Sate not so much so … West Virginia made my comment last week about how Baylor looked unbeatable but then again Oregon used to look that way too seem almost prescient … How can Muschamp survive much longer after the debacle against Missouri in The Swamp? …  Does Maryland over Iowa mean they’re both better, both worse, or about what we thought they were? … Once Ole Miss got their first touchdown it felt like the outcome against Tennessee was inevitable, and it was … Once Georgia Tech’s defense had to take the field again it felt like the outcome against UNC was inevitable, and it was.

Time for a new J3C Top 25 for the week, as the teams at the top begin to separate themselves a little more from those in the middle or below

1. Mississippi State (1)
2. Florida State (2)
3. Ole Miss (4)
4. Michigan State (5)
5. Auburn (7)
6. Oregon (8)
7. Alabama (9)
8. Georgia (10)
9. Kansas State (11)
10. Notre Dame (6)
11. TCU (13)
12. Baylor (3)
13. Arizona (15)
14. Arizona State (16)
15. Nebraska (17)
16. Ohio State (20)
17. East Carolina (19)
18. Oklahoma (12)
19. USC (23)
20. Clemson (22)
21. Utah (Un)
22. Duke (24)
23. Minnesota (25)
24. Marshall (Un)
25. West Virginia (Un)

Dropped from this week’s poll:  Oklahoma State (14), Stanford (18), Texas A&M (21)

Ready To Rock (weekly playlists)

Five songs in, five songs out, nearly half the top 40 has turned over in the the past three weeks.  Alas, the streak of no songs missing from Spotify comes to an end after two months … but it’s all good anyhow.   Crank it to 11 and enjoy.

Missing songs this week:
Play Ball – AC/DC

New to the Spotify list this week:
Savages – Theory Of A Deadman f. Alice Cooper (re-entry),  One Too Many – New Medicine,
Rise – Fight The Fade (re-entry), Zombies In The Sun – Letters From The Fire, Dragonaut – Judas Priest

Dropping off the Spotify list this week
Room To Breathe – You Me At Six,  Can You Feel My Heart – Bring Me The Horizon, Respect – Devour The Day, Only One – Scott Stapp, Call Me The Breeze – Eric Clapton,

For the larger (nearly 200 songs) YouTube version there’s over a half dozen songs added  this week including the next single from Chevelle, classic rock supergroup Rated X (featuring Joe Lynn Turner at the mic), Northern Ireland rockers Trucker Diablo,  quite possibly the (im)purely hottest video I’ve ever seen in my life from Meg Myers, and more. You can find it at this link

Also, if you’re wondering exactly how all of this gets put together – the hows & whys of it – this recent blog entry probably explains more than you ever wanted to know.
